such beginner shibe thread wow how to get coin

how to shibecoin v rich in minutes much instruct so simple any doge can do

START HERE

UPDATE 1/21/14: I'm not updating this guide anymore. Most of the steps should still work though. See the wiki or check the sidebar for updated instructions.
Before you do anything else, you need to get a wallet. Until there's a secure online wallet, this means you need to download the dogecoin client.
Now open the client you just downloaded. You'll be given a default address automatically, and it should connect to peers and start downloading the dogechain (aka blockchain in formal speak). You'll know because there will be a progress bar at the bottom and at the lower right there should be a signal strength icon (TODO: add screenshots).
If you've waited 2 or 3 minutes and nothing is happening, copy this:
maxconnections=100 addnode=95.85.29.144 addnode=162.243.113.110 addnode=146.185.181.114 addnode=188.165.19.28 addnode=166.78.155.36 addnode=doge.scryptpools.com addnode=doge.netcodepool.org addnode=doge.pool.webxass.de addnode=doge.cryptopool.it addnode=pool.testserverino.de addnode=doge.luckyminers.com addnode=doge.cryptovalley.com addnode=miner.coinedup.comdoge addnode=doge.cryptoculture.net addnode=dogepool.pw addnode=doge.gentoomen.org addnode=doge.cryptominer.net addnode=67.205.20.10 addnode=162.243.113.110 addnode=78.46.57.132
And paste it into a new text file called dogecoin.conf, which you then place into the dogecoin app directory.
Now restart your qt client and the blockchain should start downloading in about 1-2 minutes.
Once it finished downloading, you're ready to send and receive Dogecoins!

GETTING COINS

Decide how you want to get Dogecoin. Your options are:
I'll go into detail about each of these. I'm currently writing this out. I'll make edits as I add sections. Suggestions are welcome.

MINING

Mining is how new dogecoins are created. If you're new to crypto currencies, read this. To mine (also called "digging"), a computer with a decent GPU (graphics card) is recommended. You can also mine with your CPU, but it's not as efficient.

GPU MINING

These instructions cover only Windows for now. To mine, you'll need to figure out what GPU you have. It'll be either AMD/ATI or Nvidia. The setup for both is approximately the same.

Step One: Choose a pool

There's a list of pools on the wiki. For now it doesn't really matter which one you choose. You can easily switch later.
NOTE: You can mine in two ways. Solo mining is where you mine by yourself. When you find a block you get all the reward. Pool mining is when you team up with other miners to work on the same block together. This makes it more likely that you'll find a block, but you won't get all of it, you'll have to split it up with others according to your share of the work. Pool mining is recommended because it gives you frequent payouts, because you find more blocks. The larger the pool you join, the more frequent the payouts, but the smaller the reward you get.
Over a long period of time the difference between pool and solo mining goes away, but if you solo mine it might be months before you get any coins.

Step two: Set up pool account

The pool you chose should have a getting started page. Read it and follow the instructions. Instructions vary but the general idea is:
When you're done with this, you'll need to know:

Step three: Download mining software

For best performance you'll need the right mining software.
Unzip the download anywhere you want.

Step four: Set up miner

Create a text file in the same folder as your miner application. Inside, put the command you'll be running (remove brackets).
For AMD it's cgminer.exe --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://: -u -p
For Nvidia it's cudaminer.exe -o stratum+tcp://: -O :
Substitute the right stuff in for the placeholders. Then on the next line of the text file type pause. This will let you see any errors that you get. Then save the file with any name you want, as long as the file extension is .bat. For example mine_serverName.bat.

Step five: Launch your miner

Just open the .bat file and a command line window should pop up, letting you know that the miner is starting. Once it starts, it should print out your hash rate.
If you now go to the pool website, the dashboard should start showing your hashrate. At first it'll be lower than what it says in the miner, but that's because the dashboard is taking a 5 minute average. It'll catch up soon enough.
NOTE: A normal hashrate is between 50 Kh/s up to even 1 Mh/s depending on your GPU.

You're now mining Dogecoins

That's it, nothing more to it.

CPU MINING

CPU mining isn't really recommended, because you'll be spending a lot on more on power than you'd make from mining Dogecoin. You could better spend that money on buying Dogecoin by trading. But if you have free electricity and want to try it out, check out this informative forum post.

Trading

Trading has been difficult so far, but Dogecoin just got added to a few new exchanges. If you don't have a giant mining rig, this is probably the best way to get 100k or more dogecoins at the moment. I'll write up a more complete guide, but for now check out these sites:

Faucets

Faucets are sites that give out free coins. Usually a site will give out somewhere between 1 and 100 Dogecoin. Every site has its own time limits, but usually you can only receive coins once every few hours, or in some cases, days. It's a great way to get started. All you do is copy your address from the receive section of your wallet and enter it on some faucet sites. Check out /dogecoinfaucets for more. If you go to each site on there you might end up with a couple hundred Dogecoin!

Begging

This method is pretty straightforward. Post your receiving address, and ask for some coins. Such poor shibe. The only catch is, don't do it here! Please go to /dogecoinbeg.

Tips

At the moment there are two tip bots:
Other redditors can give you Dogecoin by summoning the tip bot, something like this:
+dogetipbot 5 doge
This might happen if you make a good post, or someone just wants to give out some coins. Once you receive a tip you have to accept it in a few days or else it'll get returned. Do this by following the instructions on the message you receive in your inbox. You reply to the bot with "+accept". Commands go in the message body. Once you do that, the bot will create a tipping address for you, and you can use the links in the message you receive to see your info, withdraw coins to your dogecoin-qt wallet, see your history, and a bunch of other stuff.
As a bonus, so_doge_tip has a feature where you can get some Dogecoins to start with in exchange for how much karma you have. To do this, send the message "+redeem DOGE" to so_doge_tip. You'll need to create a tipping account if you don't have one.
If you want to create a tipping account without ever being tipped first, message either of the bots with "+register" and an address will be created for you.

Of Wolves and Weasels - Day 145 - DOGE4DOGE - Rebuilding the Hype Machine

Hey all! GoodShibe here!
One of the failures of DOGE4NASCAR -- one that, sadly, wasn't even our fault -- was that we had done all this amazing work to get attention onto us and our coin...
But there was no easy, simple way for the people who found us to 'impulse buy' some Dogecoins for themselves.
When we talk about Services that we need, having a fast, safe, easy, reliable way to get your hands on Dogecoins is absolutely crucial as we move forward.
I know there are some options in the works, and I know that there are a few sellers on Dogemarket who are legit. But we need something fast, clean, professional - something non-threatening, something that inspires confidence for first-timers and yet, can handle volume.
If that sounds like a tall order, well, it is - but that's our next step toward the moon. And the first one to figure that out, get that up and running and stable? Enjoy your profits, because you've earned them.
For the entire month of June, we're going to be working hard to get our Bootstrap Economy up and running, getting Shibes to step up and help other Shibes for Dogecoins, get coins transferring amongst ourselves rather than sold on exchanges for other currencies.
In order to make that work, we need to re-tool our DOGE4NASCAR hype machine.
Did someone you hired do amazing work for you? Let us know in the sub!
Share their creations with us! Share their info with us! Did you have an amazing experience thanks to another Shibe? Share it with us - photos, videos, you name it!
Make us jealous for you! Make us want to live vicariously through you! ;D)
One of the most important things we can do to help make Dogecoin truly soar is to offer items and experiences that you can ONLY buy with Dogecoin.
I asked in one of my last posts if you'd pay Dogecoin to learn how to surf?
That one question got me a ton of PMs!
People are willing to pay Dogecoins for all sorts of experiences!
Imagine getting to be on track, shaking Josh Wise's hand, wishing him luck in person, just before the race. Sitting, track-side, just a few feet away from the pit-crew - in the heart of the race itself.
Would you pay for that kind of experience?
Imagine getting to hang out with some talented musician Shibes and cut your first record! Or go to an exclusive, Shibe-only concert? Maybe we can get FoxFaction and some other Shibes to band together and put something together?
Would you pay Dogecoins for that?
Would you invest in coins to have on hand, just in case an opportunity like that popped up?
We need to get fellow Shibes not just 'excited' about building our economy, but actively thinking about and searching for ways to help!
The good news is that a lot of speculators and people who 'thought they were investing in something like Bitcoin' have now left the building. Which means that those cheap coins that are sitting on the market are there waiting to be bought up by Shibes. By people who will hold them and use them and tip them.
I've been buying up what I can when I can (not a rich Shibe, sadly) but there's still lots left out there for the rest of you.
The heart of the matter, of DOGE4DOGE, really, is this: If we can't inspire ourselves - the people most personally vested in Dogecoin's success - to make Dogecoin work as a currency, then how can we go to others and expect them to join in with us?
We're a fun place and all -- and no one could ever deny it -- but we're also a currency. In order to be an actual currency, we need to be able to use our tips for more than just tipping. All those people we've sent coins to? They need to be able to see Dogecoin as something useful as well as fun.
Something that, when spent, they want more of.
And that's what we're working toward this month!
DOGE4DOGE is about spending our time and brilliance and creativity focused entirely on us. It's about Shibes taking the power back for ourselves, putting our coins in our hands and using them.
And THAT's how we're going to build the foundation for a much, much larger economy, together.
But it starts here, with you, with us.
Today!
It's 7:34AM EST and we're at 80.57% of DOGEs found. Our Global Hashrate is seeing a huge spike right now, from ~41 to ~48 Gigahashes per second and our Difficulty is also spiking from ~634 to ~827.
If you can mine, now's a great time to get out there and get some DOGEs!
As always, I appreciate your support!

Sigam as instrucções aqui.
DESTE-ME BUÉ POUCAS DOGECOINS. COMO CONSIGO MAIS?
De muitas formas! Podes:

Of Wolves and Weasels - Day 148 - DOGE4DOGE - Building a Worldwide Brand

Hey all, GoodShibe here!
With our Bootstrap Service Economy starting to take shape, I think now is an excellent time for us to talk about Marketing and Advertising and how we're actually more than just a coin - why we're building a Worldwide Brand.
And why that's a great thing.
You see, I read a post today from slipstream-
Reading comments on hacker news and found this interesting comment related to dogecoin...
Which got me thinking. See, traditionally, I've never been a 'sales' person or an 'Advertising' person. In fact, I have, especially when I was younger, espoused a very... uh... Bill Hicks-ish (warning: NSFW language) approach to the topic.
So what changed?
Mostly, my perspective.
Marketing and Advertising are tools, no more or less bad than hammers or power saws. Heck, I spent all last weekend Advertising for the Lego Movie without even realizing it. (Seriously, I'm not being paid for this, but check it out, it's awesome).
But we do it all the time.
We want people to know about and appreciate the same things that we do. We tell people where to try good food, where the best grocery deals are, where the cheapest gas is, what Radio stations we like, what TV shows and movies we're watching.
If you've ever used a Foursquare-ish app to announce your location, you're Advertising for someone - doing their work for them. If you've ever raved about how awesome Game of Thrones is... you're Advertising.
Most of us don't realize it, but there's actually quite a difference between Marketing and Advertising. Advertising is only about getting the word out there - it is only a small part of the Marketing process.
But Marketing itself covers quite a large number of other factors:
"Market research, media planning, public relations, product pricing, distribution, customer support, sales strategy, and community involvement." (From above, linked article)
And, whether we realize it or not, we're actively taking part in this process, daily.
Here's a brief set of examples, just off the top of my head:
Market Research - What are the other coins doing? What's Bitcoin/Litecoin/etc doing?
Media Planning - Hey, let's help get the Jamaican Bobsled Team to Sochi.
Public Relations - See our What is Dogecoin Video
Product Pricing - How many threads exist about us watching the price and waxing poetic about where it should and shouldn't be?
Distribution - Tipping
Customer Support - /Dogeducation, for one. HowToDoge.com, DogecoinTutorial.com, all sorts of options there.
Sales Strategy - DOGE4DOGE is all about helping our coin gain acceptance locally and worldwide
Community Involvement - I'm pretty sure this one goes without saying
Where Marketing and Advertising go to the Dark Side is when it becomes about Lies. When you can't actually sell the product on its merits.
The International Brand that we're building with Dogecoin is something that WE'VE had a say in every step of the way. Our symbol, our coin, has come to represent our values of Fun and Kindness, Compassion and Camaraderie - worldwide, no matter what language you speak.
We fight for the the Underdoge - and we believe that the future of money is in showing appreciation for people, instantly, no matter where they are in the world. Financially empowering the people who are working to make their world a more fun, more interesting, better place to live.
No one person did this. You did, all of us did.
Because we wanted it bad enough.
We took a joke and made the world laugh along with us - and there is more joy and laughter and fun and kindness in the world... thanks to you.
Thanks to Dogecoin.
So while some people might scoff and roll their eyes, I feel that we should continue to pick up and use the tools that we've been given.
Because 'Money' is the least revolutionary thing about us.
We're not 'going' to change the world.
We ARE changing the world.
And we're only just getting started.
It's 9:05AM EST and we're at 81.05% of DOGEs found. Our Global Hashrate is holding strong at ~46 Gigahashes per second and our Difficulty is down from ~866 to ~713.
As always, I appreciate your support!

Shibe WOW STRATEGY: much coins. many stable growth. so crypto. 2 the moon!

My dear wonderful amazing great shibes,
We have been travelling faster than speed of light to the moon, but there are still some things we can do to improve dogecoin!
One of the biggest reasons for dogecoin popularity is that it has presented cryptocurrency to the world as something simple, that anyone can and should do, not only because its cool but because its fun. Just like it's fun for doges to dig bones (such example)
So for us to be successful in presenting the currency of the future that will dominate the world and surpass bitcoin and all other cryptocurrencies, we need to continue to make it cool and fun! (wow)
Some suggestions that we could try to improve, with the help of our crypto shibes:
doge is love doge is life

My story. It was a long hard way but now I´m here :) Thank you all!(Long text)

Yeah.... Hi, my name is Yannick. I´m pretty new to this Community but I want you to tell my story and want to show that you can make it too! First of all I want to excuse my bad english, I hope you can understand nearly everything:) So let´s start over :
Hi, my name is Yannick, I´m 17 years old (9 days till i turn 18!) from germany. The first time I heard about a cryptocurrency was 2 months ago when a friend send me an article abour Bitcoin. I didn´t read it, I just saw some statistics and a picture of a room filled with graphiccards. I forgot this article very fast.
Two weeks ago, while beeing on Imgur(yes, I´m a Imguiran) I saw a post about a guy who postet a picture of his selfmade Dogecoin-Banknote with a QR-code on it. That got my attention, because i liked the Idea of making your own money, but as many cool things i see on imgur I forgot so search for it. ~4 days passed then a friend send me a link of dogeminer.se (He´s a big fan of the Doge meme like me and we played games like Dr.meth or cookie clicker as fun-competition before). But like all of this games of this type they get booring after a while.. Heres where everything beginns: On the bottom of the dogeminer page was a link which says "how to get real coins?" and i got send to the official dogecoin page.
Now it really got me, I startet to google about dogecoin and after 30 minutes my mind was like :" I want this, I want to be a part". So here my long way to my first Dogecoins started. I registerd myself at online Api and tried to get some Dogecoin from faucets, what didnt work at all. After some more reading I knew thats safer to have an offline wallet, so I downloaded it. I took me 2 days to download all blocks and I was so happy when it was done! I instantly copied my adress and tried to get some coins from the faucets, what again didnt worked. I was really frustrated, all that time and reading articels - and it didnt worked. I was too scared to post something in this board,I thought that here a lot of agressive people like in other boards who hate newbies, I didn´t realised that the DogecoinCommunity is relaxed and friendly at this momment. So what i did was adding random persons on the offical Dogecoin-Steamgroup. 3 People accepted me. The first one told me Dogecoin is a joke, and i have to stop. I didnt. The second one was annoyed and told me he cant help me. Now there was my lucky time: the third one was very friendly and he was also german. He said he stoped mining a month ago but he started updating his wallet, just to send me some testD(very kind). He really did it, but it didnt appeard in my wallet. In this momment I was ultra frustrated. The next day I cleaned up my whole pc, deinstalled the wallet and installed it again. Again I spend my time updating till next day evening. And surprisingly my new Shibefriend was able to send me some doge. That was the part where i was happy again. Next day I really wanted to get into the digging-thing. I spend 4 hours watching tutorials, downloading cudaminer and manager, but at the end of the day, i started the .bat-file and the window dissapeared instand. This again was a low point of my flight to the moon.
But i wouldnt be here if didnt try it again next day. I updated all my drivers and yeah... I was able to "mine". Seeing all of the Mining tutorials I really thought my "old" pc could get a hashrate of ~ 300 too. Take away one 0. Yeah 30 khashs/s, first i was pretty depressed, but then a (yay!!) appeared on the screen. I was shocked! Is this my first Dcoin ? After 2 minutes again (yay!!). I was so happy at this momment. I told my self 3 more days and you´ll be able to make your own cool paper banknote wich is 1000D worth. I checked my poolsite just to realise that it says Doge : 0,000 and Your Valid : 3. Again as many times before a big "?" appeared over my head. Then my friendly Steamfriend explained me the "diggingsystem" and finding of Blocks. I didn´t like what i heard but, Hey he got 19.000D with mining, how long does it take ? So i let my pc run till i went to bed. Next day when I got home I checked my pool. 1,724351 Doge..... wow much Do..NOT. That wasn´t what i wanted to see, I was really sad. All the time i spend for just one doge, one Doge! At the same time i started to comment on peoples posts on this board and someone just gave me 50 doge. Again i was shocked on a positive way :)
After all that I´m sitting here writing on this 40 minutes long text with my lagging pc (didding right now) and just want to say to everyone: THANK YOU SO MUCH !
Its been a hard time but now im here. I´m feeling realy good in this community and i really like it. I want to show everone whos new, that its possible! Dont stop if something didnt work! Here are thounsands of nice Shibes who love to help you.
Okay people it´s late over here. I´m going to sleep, just checking my valid : 120 maybe I have more luck this time :) Can´t wait to check out reddit tomorrow! Again thank you everone! Let your dreams come true ... To the Moon !

Me [28M] with my girlfriend [26F] of 2.5 years and the slow decline into a one-way relationship that I just want to fix.

Edit: Thanks for the hard words everyone. I didn't like what I was reading at first but it seems kind of unanimous. I think this is going to be a long week... and we're going to need to have a long and hard talk.
Oddly enough I made this account to confess something in /wow... and suddenly realized I have a lot to get off my chest. At the end of this... I probably made her seem like a bitch and made myself seem heartless for not supporting the things her family is going through.
I just want to say, she's probably the sweetest woman I've ever met. Over the years I can't tell you how many times I had to tell her not to watch the news, or to turn it off because things were making her cry. She's also so fun to talk with, while she's spiritual and I lean a little more realistic, we loved watching the Cosmos remake together, and recently started watching the old ones. The conversations we have afterward are fulfilling and deep. She has the same dark sense of humor I have, and we've spent entire weekends on youtube together just surfing for goofy things.
Whenever we have a good day, it completely washes away whatever bad things have been going on between us or in our lives at the time.
TLDR: I only write this because... it feels like I am carrying the burdens in the relationship, and I'm the one who has to risk it all. She has reclused, from being a nerdy college student, to living at home with her parents and playing games all day. I've tried talking her out of it, but all of our conversations end with her accusing me of trying to make her feel guilty.
The long version is below:
(Ugh, I made a novel of this. To avoid the gigantic wall of text, you could just skip down to where I say: "Springtime Promotion")
Backgrounds
Me: I was 25 at the time. Fresh out of a trade school. I did ROTC in highschool, then worked lots of different jobs until I went to Job Corps, left with an A+ Cert, and ended up getting a job doing really really menial IT work on a Navy base as a Civilian in California... then I met her.
Her: Not a Navy girl (thank god!), we actually met online in SecondLife, she lives in Colorado, works at a grocery store, going to school part-time while studying biology and agronomy (basically the science of farming). Let me tell you she's a 10/10 in my books. 10 for brains and personality. 10 for body. I'm going to call her Sarah because that's pretty far from her name.
So here's how we met; oddly, at a goofy dance club thing in SL. I was actually there trying to show off a few accessories I made and see if anyone asked where I got them so I could plug my store. No one gave a fuck, but that didn't matter because I ended up having a great conversation with someone, and at the end of the night we exchanged Skype contacts.
We hung out a few more times in SL, I showed her a few of the weird places I'd found over the years, she introduced me to a few of her friends. It was a super casual friendship, but the more we talked outside of SL, the more we liked each other. She was fresh out on her own, trying out living by herself for the first time. She's super shy, but I manage to get her out of her shell a lot. Eventually she admits that I'm pretty much the first person she's met online that she's felt this comfortable with.
Of course I'm also super stoked when I find out she plays lots of games, watches star trek and star wars, she's super giggly, and I have to plug it again, absolutely my favorite body type. At that point in time I was trying way too hard to keep it cool, keep it in my pants, and not blow it.
After awhile, she mentions that she wishes we lived closer so we could just 'date and get it over with'. I was elated, but we kept realistic about it and admitted that the distance was definitely a problem and neither of us could really risk our goals in life over an internet fling. Regardless we did stay semi-romantic with each other, but both of us did try going on a few dates over those few months.
6 Months into the refriendtionship, I got a job offer I couldn't refuse:
It was kind of out of the blue, and a weird way. Basically a friend of a friend of my dad's was starting up a new company and wanted some help with setting up the computer network. It started as something I just did as a freelance thing over a week in the summer, but then he offered me a job and promised to match my pay at the other job. It sounded awesome, working for a startup and being in a position where I would probably earn a lot of respect - but even better was that the company actually focused on soil sciences, so I finally got to know a little bit about Sarah's passions.
Sarah is super excited and supportive, and she also talks about how great it would be if she got a job for them too when she was finished with school. At this point things finally started to get a little more romantic and we talked about meeting up somewhere, and we started planning a vacation.
Around this time we also started playing some MMOs together, and Sarah confessed that she hated SecondLife and she didn't want to go back because her friends there were actually people she met through an ex. At her urging, we cut off contact with them. I liked playing SL, but honestly I didn't mind leaving myself as it was fun playing a game.
Sarah quits her job and school.
I was only 3 months into the new job when I check my phone and see that I have a dozen missed messages. Turns out she twisted her ankle at work, and after lots of fighting with the supervisor (Which she never got along with very well), she decided to quit. It was an emotional day, but I reminded her that she had already put up with a lot, and she would find a new job easily.
A few weeks go by and amidst her finals she confesses to me that she doesn't want to enroll next term. She just wants to move back home. It threw a wrench into our vacation plans, but I was still trying to be supportive of her and understanding that she was probably homesick. Once she got home, she ended up getting a job working with her mom at a Care Center ("Old Folks Home"). She was actually making less here than at the grocery store, but it seemed to be a lot slower paced so maybe she could relax.
Around this time she also confessed that she had social anxiety and depression, and I sympathized with her deeply since my own depression was the reason why I couldn't join the Air Force. We really bonded and learned to lean on each other when we were having a bad day.
Amazingly though, it was almost Christmas and my boss gave me $1000 as a bonus. I told her our vacation plans were still on and I would handle her side of things.
Vacation.
So that Spring I flew out to see her. I met her family and at first I was super nervous because her dad is retired Army, but still working (Nurse) and I was sure he was going to be a hardass... but instead him and I totally hit it off. I swear it was like a really cheesy 80's movie as him and I had some beers and fixed Sarah's car. Her and I saw almost the whole state of Colorado those two weeks, and it was amazing. We hit it off in person better than we did online.
Oh. And did I mention yet that she was a 10? Let me just add again, she's my fetish. Good god I had to pace myself. She better than the pictures she sent me. Okay - I'm at work I need to keep myself under control (but our first few weeks together would've made Hugh Hefner jealous).
A few days before I was flying home, we talked about future plans. She decided she'd like to come to California and live with me for awhile and try something new. She said she'd start saving up for the move. She eventually confessed that she didn't want to live in California long term, and made me promise her that if we were still together in 5 years, we'd try to move back to Colorado. That was fine with me. I liked Colorado.
Around this time we had our 1 year "anniversary".
Summer went by fast. The company was really taking off and I was busy working almost 60 hours a week, and having to do crash courses on using some of the lab equipment so I could help out. Sarah was still very supportive, but around September she got some bad news. Her dad had been in a car wreck, and while he was fine, he hit his head really hard. We were worried he would be in a coma, but a few days later he seemed to be fine... except that the doctors warned that there could have been some brain damage. Sure enough, he started having some issues. I won't go into too much medical detail here, but let's leave it with dramatic mood swings along with some nerve damage.
I talked to my boss and got a small loan from the company so I could fly out and spend time with them all. It really felt like I was becoming part of their family at that time, and I spent a lot of time with Sarah and her mom just cooking and cleaning and helping out around the house while Dad recovered. He didn't break any bones and he was just very banged up and bruised. I mostly noticed that his sleeping pattern was completely out of whack.
Despite that, a month after the wreck he was back to work, and so was I.
Late that fall Sarah confessed that she didn't think she'd be moving to California. Her dad's personality was changed after the wreck and she didn't want to leave him. I was pretty hurt, but I knew it was coming, and it would have been selfish and crazy to assume she'd want to move after all that had happened. But... yeah it did sting. I wondered where our relationship would go next, but we decided to just keep letting things play out.
That Christmas something crazy happened. Something I had been meddling with for a few years but not paid attention to utterly exploded over a few months. Bitcoin. Honestly it scared me a little to suddenly read in the news that I had $5,000 in some digital wallet on my computer, so as soon as I could I sold it all off. I'm not sure why I was scared. I think I was worried there was some weird market manipulation going on and we were all going to get scammed. (I checked the price after writing this and I guess I was right).
I used most of it to pay off some bills, but I decided to fly out to my girlfriend again and spend Christmas with them, and that's when things... got weird.
I really wanted to just make everything go well for the family that week, so I paid for the entire Christmas dinner, and gave a big chunk of the money to Sarah's parents so they could pay down some of their own bills. I also probably spent $300 on Sarah alone. It was really fun, and it felt great to just provide for them and spend time with my other family.
But Sarah didn't feel the same. She was happy to see me, but wished that I hadn't spent anything on them, but at the same time she fought with me over buying the plane ticket and said if I wanted to help them I shouldn't have spent so much on the last minute plane ticket. Her and I ended up bickering over really stupid stuff most of that week. Her dad was also definitely not the same guy. The first time I had met him he was very talkative - now he rarely talked at all.
I admit... when I flew home I started to wonder if I had done the wrong thing. They had a pretty shitty year, while mine was going well. Fuck.

Springtime Promotion

As if to make matters worse, I ended up getting promoted that spring. I got a small payraise, and when I excitedly told Sarah the news, the first words out of her mouth were "So I guess you're not going to move to Colorado then, are you?" That became the topic of the spring. And the summer. Constantly she asked me when I was going to move to Colorado. It sucked. I like my job. I asked her to give me a year, and that finally stopped those arguments.
I flew out again that summer and we took a road trip to Salt Lake City. I had imagined that the Salt Lakes would be like taking her to the beach but it actually turned out it was kinda gross. We cut our road trip short so we could just go back and relax. We actually had a really good time, and I helped her dad do a little yard work. He still didn't talk much, but he did tell me a really racist joke out of the blue. I laughed because he probably thought it was really funny himself, but when I told Sarah she was really upset and said that was completely unlike him. The last day I was there she was in tears the whole day and begged me that the next time I flew out to her, it would be for good.
So... I went to work and I realized I'd have to start documenting a lot of the stuff I had done so whoever replaced me would have some stuff to go by. I actually started crying at work. I don't like the thought of leaving here. I've tried to write documentation and tutorials several times since then. Each time I am just overwhelmed with sadness or anxiety and I stop. I can't do it.
Sarah ended up quitting her job at the care home. She said she had a panic attack when an old woman punched her in the face. She cried to me every night for about a week about how bad she felt, but how scary it was, and how much she wanted me to be there. She wanted me to come there sooner and I told her I would try but that it was putting pressure on me.
and that's when our fights started to change. Somehow after that, any time we had a disagreement, she told me I was just trying to make her feel guilty. Or I was kicking her while she was down, or being passive aggressive. Some of these fights I didn't even realize we were fighting until those trump cards came out.
And over the silliest things....
One time I asked her if she'd help me in some PvP in Warcraft. She happily joined me, and then out of nowhere started asking me why I made her do things that made her uncomfortable if I knew it made her uncomfortable. I told her she didn't have to PvP with me, and that I just wanted some help. And then she asked me why I was trying to make her feel guilty about it too. I spent a good hour very confused while trying to tell her that it really honestly didn't matter to me, but it just made things worse.
My timeline gets blurry here... I've been pretty depressed and it feels like it's been months of just getting by week-by-week, wondering what will happen today what upsets her. A week ago she said she doesn't want a job and just wants to "stay at home and dote on you". I honestly didn't know how to reply to that one when I spend 50 hours a week at work, sometimes weekends, and putting as much as I can into savings so I can comfortably move to Colorado and have money for rent while I look for a job...
Final straw was actually last night. It was a stupid thing. I was having a really bad day at work, and my sister had just texted the whole family that she was in the hospital (she's 3 months pregnant and now losing the baby). I was texting Sarah, keeping her updated, and telling her about my day and what had happened. I was feeling down, but remembering my birthday is next week I asked her if she was planning anything for my birthday, and added that I just needed something to look forward to.
Cue. utter. shit storm. She was disappointed in me for thinking about myself. She was angry that I was trying to make her feel guilty again. She tells me she was just going to send me pictures of herself (yes the sexy kinds and that would have been awesome and 110% good for me), but now she's not sure she wants to do that.

What was it like being raided? GAME OVER PLEASE INSERT COINS.
Do you have any regrets about your involvement with those groups? Snowden, hero or villain? Why? There's no point regretting anything because you cannot undo the past. I heard about Snowden in prison, came on the news but I only know what the news has been telling me. I will look more in to it, he's got balls I can tell you that and I admire a good set of balls.
Really? Good set of balls? Are we not doing phrasing anymore? Yes really.
Any advice on learning how to program? I'm struggling with Python at the moment. You don't learn how to program, you learn how use a programming language, programming is what you do with that information. Read lots of examples of source code, see if you can work out whats going on. Don't just copy/paste the examples, write them word for word no matter how long they are. Not only will it help understand what it is doing better you may also learn a few tricks.
That's deep man. Thanks for the advice. No problem.
You don't learn how to program, you learn how use a programming language. Damn, pretty sweet quote there. It's also true.
How did you get started 'hacking'? I first started back in 1998 I mostly used to hack PC games, hex editing, binary reverse engineering stuff. Then I learned how to use C and assembly and it just went from there.
What do you recommend for someone that's interested in hacking(in terms of learning it)? Hacking is the art of reverse engineering, before you can reverse engineer something you need to have an in depth knowledge of it.
What are your thoughts on mass surveillance? Any advice for the masses? It's been going on longer than you or I have existed. Strong encryption is the key.
Ever considered a job with the NSA? GCHQ? I don't think I would pass the security clearance now anyways. I am x military though so who knows.
I am surprised you are allowed to use computers or the internet at all now considering some of the parole conditions of many American hackers. Can you talk about some of the restrictions in the SCPO and why you feel they are unfair? Basically it prevents me from using encryption that allows hidden volumes, virtual machines and I cannot delete my internet history. It lasts for 5 years and each breach of the order can be punishable up to 5 years.
It's not a case of them being fair or unfair. I can't go too in to detail about it if I want to take it back to court, I just want to challenge it, plus I like to keep my cards close to my chest.
So would say firefox's private browsing mode be against the rules? I don't think so, I'd have to check the src of firefox to determine if it deletes the history in private mode or if it simply does not record it in anyway. The order says "Not to delete".
So if you just image a fresh install of your variety of os(debian?) everyday would that break your parole? I could just boot live OS and not be in breach.
Is that what you do? I used to, remember slax?
Are you proud of the sacrifices you made in your lifetime? Yes I am, I never look back I just move forward in to the future hoping to find peace and happiness.
Did you meet anyone interesting in prison? There's some funny characters in prison I can tell you that, made friends for life. Most of the people in there were in there for fraud, drugs, gang stuff. I never met any famous prisoners if that's what you mean? Then again everyone's story in prison is interesting.
What is the best way to protect your digital identity, and secure your privacy? Since you have experience exploiting these vulnerabilities, what do you suggest to prevent it? Strong encryption, limit the amount of personal information you place on the internet, don't draw attention, only use a sandboxed browser and tunnel your HTTPS through SSH using the highest of encryption, PGP mail for every mail, don't store encryption keys on your computer, full disk encryption and/or hidden OS, use different emails for your banking, paypal etc, Mak3p4$5w0rdZ!nCr3d!b4LlYsTr0nG, uninstall flash use Link to youtube.com instead etc, etc...
Thanks for your answer. I am not worried about personal use, I am more worried about enterprise and or security systems. preventing people from hacking my companies website, and social media accounts. I have to keep in compliance with the financial standards, so we use PGP, and Erado, for archiving and encryption. It is just nice to get the perspective what is an easy target, what would you consider a difficult target not worth pursuing? I could write a book to answer this...
Security isn't something you can just apply it's an on going process and in most cases you are relying on products sold to you on a trust basis. You're told that Antivirus software will stop you getting a virus but what you're not told is that Antivirus software only protects you against what is known, takes less than an hour to write a new piece of malware or backdoor that your AV will never detect.
People put too much faith in to security systems without understanding how they work, their capabilities or limitations.
There's no need to be "pentested" it's a right con, they only test you against old exploits, if you update regular then you're already safe.
Use 2 factor authentication and/or strong password policy, prevent users creating the own password (they will only make them simpler)
Just make your data worthless to a hacker by encrypting it.
Insightful, thank you. I know it's a vague question, but you just confirmed my intuition. Thanks for your honest answers. No problem.
Was it worth going to prison? Nothing is worth going to prison for. Yeah they are happy I am back and I am happy to see them again. It was ~100GBP for my parents to come and visit me in prison, I was a long way from home. I told them not to waste their money because the visit only lasts 2 hours.
How is your family treating you, are they happy to have you back? Did they visit you in prison? I am x military I am used to being away from home for long periods of time. It also makes time fly faster when you're not constantly reminded about home. If you don't know what you are missing then you don't miss much.
I've never been to prison, but I lost about 8 years of my life due to bad medical advice. I used to be angry-- I was thinking why wasn't it only 2 years-- why did it have to be such a complete waste of so many years? Would that have happened if it had been only 2 years instead of 8? I don't think so. Sometimes, events like that helps to put things in to perspective. We often don't think about our lives on a day to day basis but when something out of the "norm" happens it makes us think that little more.
What do you think about bitcoin? where will it be in 10 years? I think it's great, scrypt coin too! I think they will get heavily regulated soon though. I had 78 bitcoins backed up on a SDHC before I was sent to prison. Back then they were worth ~$40 each. Come out of jail and I can't find that shit anywhere lol.
The only problem is even if I do find it, it's encrypted with keys that are on the computer the police confiscated and I can't get back.
I know right?
Sue them. They stole you $ 78k. It's killing me!
If they've not destroyed your computer or had a seize order against it then you can get back things like that. Ask your lawyer. They seized it in court, I can however apply "for a copy of evidence" under UK law and they would have to give me a copy of the HDD.
Do this. Those bitcoins won't last. How long untill they are orphaned? It's been ~3 years already.
No idea. I meant they won't last as a concept (especially not at that value). Wow, only just seen it but they peaked at ~$1000? Feels bad man.
Exactly - since then the Chinese and Russians have banned it, and you can only consider it's a downward spiral from there. I wonder how long it will last here in the west, I'm surprised it hasn't already been regulated the tax man must be pissed!
I think there are also more constructive uses for mining, I mentioned this on twitter also. See there are a lot of cancer researchers and scientists that have HUGE amounts of data that needs to be mined to help cure diseases and solve the worlds problems.
The world hash rate for crypto coins is more powerful than most of the worlds super computers combined. Cancer researchers should give coins for mining cancer research data instead of wasting time generating meaningless hashes.
Do you like sporks? Yes, I do, do you?
Hey man we are asking YOU the questions here. Leave the interrogations to us the professionals. Ok bro.
Ex Army eh? Signals? or Tech in REME? I was in the Infantry.
So how were you ID'd for arrest? I fucked up, I've already explained it on here, lurk moar.
Just curious, do you think big brother is reading this ama real time or at all? They will be on this like flies round shit.
Where does/did LulzSec congregate? What is the education background of a typical member, or from where did you learn to do what you can do? We had our own private IRCD and encrypted silc servers, also channels on public servers. I am completely self taught, I have been at it since 1998.
Isn't the true "lulzy" part of this that you guys bugged some people and mocked their security and then ended up getting busted and going to prison while the companies you annoyed made their security better? That's pretty lulzy to me. What I find lulzy is the fact they were all vulnerable to webapp vulnerabilites and don't use PGP.
Wasn't LulzSec responsible for the major Sony Online Entertainment security breach? I know you wanted to retaliate because SONY was suing George Holtz for the PS3 jailbreaking thing he did, but the only thing that happened is that you inconvenienced the people. Basically I am asking. Why did you ruin all those accounts, which lead to people having their credit cards stolen, instead of just attacking SONY directly. Also, how many accounts were compromised? LulzSec says 1000, SONY says ~4000. LulzSec had nothing to do with the PSN breach, fact.
Do you suspect who was responsible? (group name, not actual name) Honestly, no Idea there is too much internet rumor and no one has officially come forward to claim it. I read some people in Spain were arrested and questioned in relation to the PSN breach but that still doesn't mean it was them.
What are your political views? I don't really have any political views, however I would like to see the rest of the world get a chance to sample democracy and be free from oppressive dictatorships (no naming names).
At first welcome back. So here an total haxolulz/past unrelated question what kind of music do you like? I like Hard Dance music, Hard Trance/Hard House.
Fuck yeah! Trance and House all the way. I used to have a set of Technics 1210 Mk2 and mix like mad when I was younger, still got some of the vinyl haha.
Hackers soundtrack, orbitals by halicon. Not hard but one of my favorites. Thanks I'll check this out. The LuLzSec hacker song by ytcracker is the ONLY hacker song haha.Link to www.youtube.com
Who is your favorite Trance artist? Ever been to any festivals? Tidy boys, nothing but. Their events are awesome, youtube "Tidy weekender"
How came you guys got the cia down? It was hit with a 100,000 node botnet.
What does this mean in layman's terms? 100,000 computers were used to send ALOT of data to the server causing it crash.
That's as simple as it gets.
Any advice for aspiring hacktivists? Trust no one.
Still on 4chan? fav boards? Rules 1&2 always apply.
Hate to break it to you bro, but 4chan is just full of kids now. The rules of the internet have somewhat faded since you left the intertubes in 2011 :( consequences will never be the same again. Ebaums world has been dead a longtime because people broke 1&2
What's your opinion on the book by Parmy Olson? I think I recall she said she talked to you by chat, but how accurate was what eventually made it into the book? I lost the book before I could read it all so I don't know...
What do you think your job prospects are now with the conviction hanging over your head? Not too good! I'm on my arse at the minuet, I'll do any job!
Any job? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Allmost...
Write a book. Is it really needed?
Not needed per se. But you can tell an autobiographical perspective that nobody else can. The story lulz & Anon supporters would want to hear. Obviously not a 'tell all' but a 'tell most'? Yeah I get what you mean.
Was there a time before you were caught that you were worried or thought the authorities might have a clue as to your real identity? I knew I was going to get caught, I fucked up.
Did you have a backup plan? There was no backup plan but I realized the mistake early and acted accordingly! No I do not own guns, they're a lot more restricted here in the UK.
Are you still in touch with Jason? Saw he went to prison recently, I actually went to HS with him. How long did he get?
Jeremy, not Jason. Twins. Yeah, I think he got 10 years or something like that? I've not heard anything from him since I got out, hope he is ok.
I look up to you on how you managed to convince everyone you're a girl, smart and funny thing at the same time. Really I look up to you like a celebrity, hah. Maintaining a strong persona such as kayla and doing what I did wasn't easy. If I could go back in time I wouldn't change anything, I'd just keep going back in time to relive it over and over again. Nothing is worth prison time, it's a waste of life however I did manage to get some qualifications out of it. Not many people can say they left prison with a diploma for the thing they went in for.
If you could go back in time, before the creation of Lulzsec, what would you do differently? Also, was Lulzsec's missions worth the prison time? Where did you learn social engineering, and hacking? I learned to do what I do from programming, it is simply reverse engineering.
Thank you for your answer. What do you think about the Syrian Electronic Army, their methods of attacks, and their meaning? I honestly believe they are state sponsored (possibly not from the beginning) but I do believe they are the people Assad is turning to. As for their methods I don't even know what methods they are using, I'll read in to it though, I'm fresh out of prison and most of what they have done was done while I had no internet access. I've been banned from the internet since 2011.
That they are, got many of Advanced Replacements on products. If you had to choose between, Windows or OSX which would you choose. I'd choose Windows, I'm not a fan of OSX.
This is probably the longest I've ever seen someone take questions in an AMA. Thank you for dedicating so much time to answering people's questions. No problem I enjoy answering questions and I will be here until the questions dry up.
How did it feel being able to get behind a computer for a first time in 2+ years? Did you build a rig to re-live the novelty or do anything particularly special? Porn, me thinks. I was able to use computers in prison. I was given a job as a class room assistant helping teach people about computers, basic things. I also managed to complete a number of computer related qualifications and gained a diploma. Seeing the internet after 2+ years was kind of strange though. The internet looks a lot different now compared to how it did in 2011. To be honest I don't like it, it has that "iphone look" to it all, big buttons and lots of unneeded JS. I wish I could build a rig I just do not have the money to do so. Hopefully soon I will find a nice job and maybe then I will build one.
Did you have internet in jail? No they do not allow internet in UK prisons.
Do you think access to the internet should be a human right? When will it be? Yes it should be and I am sure it is already so!
Here you go Link to www.wired.co.uk
My question: Did you ever have any suspicions about Sabu? At any point did you guys think, Something is up with this dude? Everyone had suspicions about everyone, things were being patched, rootkits disappearing, logs being leaked etc..
Was prison anything like you had expected it to be? Better than I thought it would be, I had most prison movies flashing in my head on the way there from court but it's nothing like that.
Could you elaborate more on what it's like please? Once I got to prison I realized it's nothing like the movies. Because it was all over the news when I was sentenced everyone in the jail knew who I was and what I was in for. I've made some good friends out it, people I am going to meet again once they are free. No one was ever violent towards me, you don't give any attitude you don't get any attitude. I did see some people get fucked up in there, mostly starts over something really silly, like a game of pool.
How did you pass the time? I used to pass the time playing chess with my cell mate or by watching all crazy people in there.
Did you personally encounter much violence in the prison? Or is it easy enough to stay away from it if you don't rock the boat or whatever? Well, most of the prison movies I have seen all show people stood at the bars, big guys growling "mmm fresh meat" and everyone getting stabbed up every 2 minuets. When you've never been to prison before you can't help but think back to every movie you've seen about prison.
When do you think the govt will evolve enough to have guys like you helping to grow our society? Right now it seeks to hunt you down...terrible waste of resources imo It is, there's a lot of talent rotting away in the prison system.
Administrations that in one breath expresses the need for engineers of digital space and then issues the order to capture the very people with such talents. Edit: its been many administrations haha :*( And many more to come!
Its wishful thinking but i hope that the economic imperative will win out as we progress to what can be depicted best by the Type I civilization coined by popular theoretical physicist Michio Kaku. Things need to change, that's for sure.
Is Milhouse a meme? Milhouse was the best meme!!
Do you like Wheatus? No, Wheatus sucks.
How do they ? Well I just like to suck wheats thats all.
What do you think - in Wrestlemania '98, did Mike Tyson get punched in the cock? Never watched it back then, I hope so!
Are you now like Gavin Orsay (Jimmi Simpson) on House of Cards? Never watched it, only just got out of prison I've heard a lot about that series, I'll look in to it.
Gavin in House of Cards has a guinea pig. Reminded me of "Noodles". :3. Hahaha.
the character Gavin is this hacker and there's a scene where he tells his FBI handler that they have to drop charges against Barrett Brown. Link to www.youtube.com Really?
Indeed. And check out who advised on the new season of HoC :3. Link to www.theguardian.com. HAHAHAHAHA.
Do they let you have PlayStation in British prisons? Link to www.dailymail.co.uk. They do if you buy the PlayStation.
What did you have in your cell? TV, Kettle, Radio, Bed, locker and that's it... I wasn't bothered about a play station, just used to play a lot of chess and poker.
What sort of people did you meet in association with the hacking groups? What kind of people are hackers? Out of everyone I have met there are only a small handful of people that I would put in to the "reverse engineehacker" bracket. Lots of people who know how to use exploits, not many who know how and why they work or are able to write their own, truly is a dieing art.
Do you ever think about trying to get hired for security for websites or for government computers or something along those lines? Again it's probably a trust issue...
Personally, I was very stupid and didn't really care about the ease with which personal information can spread, and didn't know how widespread NSA surveillance was. Given that a lot of stuff is out there already, if someone wanted to take the time to look at it, do you have any advice as to how to minimize the damage? Strong encryption is the key but to be honest, Internet Service Providers should be doing more to protect it's customers privacy, they should allow AES256 pipes for every customer as standard.
Many (fairly intelligent) people I talk to agree that they are concerned about surveillance and privacy on the internet, but they're resistant to try and use encryption or anything because they have it in their heads that only supergeniuses can understand computers like that. Do you have any suggestions for introducing these concepts to slightly technophobic people? I think encryption needs to be simplified for the regular user. It can get a bit confusing if you have never used it before or understand it's significance.
Also, wanted to thank you for your advice to the person below asking about how to learn programming. I know a little introductory Python, but I never really knew how to go from there to creating and understanding a whole big project. Programming languages too, learning new things is never easy, it's about determination and the will to succeed. The best way to learn is to read lots of source code and try to work out what is going on, maybe you could even improve on it?
How did you learn to hack? From learning to program.
Hacking is reverse engineering, it's an in depth knowledge of the underlying system/code/hardware/technology and the ability to take it apart piece by piece and reassemble it in to something else.
How long did it take you to become a proficient programmer? How did you learn? How long did it take you to become a proficient reverse engineer? How did you learn? I just learned from doing, trial and error. If there was something that I did not understand I would just research it, it sometimes helps to read it from more than one source. I used to just read lots of examples and try to make sense of them, if I found something new or something I did not understand I would research it.
As for time, I am unsure... I am still learning now, it is an on going process. All I can say is learn the basics and be creative, if there's something you do not understand research it, google always has the answer.
Have you only just got out of prison? I have been out a few weeks but I have only been on the internet a few days now.
Ever hear from anyone in that channel? Just one, those times are sadly gone.
When you got V&, they said two men where arrested for using the Kayla alias in some media. What happened there? The other person was my brother, they were unsure if it was him or me.
Ahh, You're poor brother... what happened when you got raided, how many people, where did they take you? I was home alone, they arrested me and took me to the police station for questioning. They told me during questioning that they had also been to arrest my brother.
Is human body very good build pc with very cheap soft?If it's so easy to exploit:( No it's a design prone to failure.
I want to learn Python 3. Codecademy is Python 2 (like all good tutorials...they seem to be for 2). Thanks for the links. I'll look into them. At the minuet I am going over logic, reading into some Verilog and other HDL because I want to experiment with some Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA).
Hey its Kayla! Hahaha.
Hey thanks for the advice in the thread . I'll definitely use that on my quest to getting my Computer science thread and furthering my programming language knowledge ! No problem.
Kayla, I just want to say thank you. Haha no problem.
Meanwhile, while you were in prison our gov't set up a fake twitter type service in Cuba with the intent of helping topple the Cuban gov't. -_- I'd like to see how you have come to this conclusion? Or is it official and that is it's official purpose?
I just find it ironic that while prosecuting with one hand the other is going to extreme lengths to topple a government with social media. It's usually the case.
You should try this at /netsec. Possibly, no way to link them over? I'll admit it, this is the first time I've ever used or been to reddit.
They would probably have a few more knowledgeable comments and questions. Doesn't seem like any of them took the bait!
Yea, go to /netsec and create a new post, and make it a link (to the url of this thread). Make the title basically the same, but bring up the fact that it's an xpost. Thanks, I'll do this after I've made a coffee!
My question: why didn't you guys get ahead of the game by targeting Google. They're the resident evil today. Care to explain?
I think he meant Umbrella Corp. They have their hands in everything, and are mercilessly expanding. Fist umbrella fuck with zombies, now google!
#tr0ll. Hahaha, I'd like to believe it but...
